Start with the governing specification

The manufacturing process is one part of the specification. API 5L, for example, covers seamless and welded pipe, with requirements addressing manufacture, inspection and testing. The project specification must therefore establish which options are permitted. Reference: API — Line Pipe ↗.

Compare fully specified products

Compare more than two labels. Align grade, diameter, wall thickness, tolerances, delivery condition and inspection requirements. Temperature, pressure, fluid and subsequent fabrication belong in the project’s technical assessment; they cannot be replaced by a general rule about the manufacturing process.

Approve alternatives before purchase

Request availability and lead times against a shared specification. If a supplier proposes an alternative, record the differences explicitly and obtain technical approval before acceptance. The purchased solution should match the approved requirements and the documentation agreed in the order.
