The material list connects design and procurement

In structural steelwork projects, a well-defined material list connects the design with purchasing, fabrication and assembly activities. Beams, open sections and hollow sections perform different functions: identifying them correctly makes it possible to request quotations that match the drawings and the project schedule.

For steel buyers, the starting point is the specification approved by the designer. It should identify the geometry, material grade, dimensions, quantity and supply conditions.

IPE beams and HE series: the differences to understand

IPE beams are parallel-flange I sections, while the HE series comprises wide-flange beams. HEA, HEB and HEM belong to different dimensional series, each with its own thicknesses, masses per metre and geometric properties.

In general, for the same nominal designation, HEA is lighter than HEB and HEM is heavier. Selection requires consulting the dimensional tables and the properties of the section specified by the design calculations. These designations identify the section geometry; the steel grade must be specified separately.

From a purchasing perspective, stating the complete designation avoids ambiguity. Lengths and the number of bars should also match the material list, so quantities and project logistics can be assessed correctly.

Hollow sections for structures

EN 10219 tubes belong to the family of cold-formed welded structural hollow sections. Part 1 of the series covers technical delivery requirements; Part 2 covers tolerances, dimensions and sectional properties. The product should be identified using the relevant part and edition of the standard and the required grade.

The purchasing enquiry should state the section shape, external dimensions, wall thickness and length. These details should match the drawings, together with any requirements for finish and documentation.

Angles and merchant bars to complete the material list

Angle sections may be specified for connections, frames, bracing and other steelwork details, according to the design. The enquiry should distinguish equal-leg from unequal-leg angles and give the complete dimensions, including thickness.

The categories “commercial sections” and “merchant bars” cover several product types. To obtain a precise quotation, name the individual section required, such as flats, rounds or squares, and specify its material, dimensions and quantity.

From the material list to a supply enquiry

Bringing materials together in an organised list makes quotations easier to compare. For each item, include the designation, grade, size, length, quantity and required documentation, adding drawing references where relevant.
